What about this air?
Air pollution, causes and impact on the environment and human health
Student shows
Eighth-grade students prepared illustrative shows the following issues in various ways:
- Acid precipitation
- The greenhouse effect
- Smog
- Ozone hole
- Air pollution in the world and human health
ACID RAIN
Student presentations included:
- Map with marked areas affected by the greatest amount of acid precipitation
- A mock-up showing the differences between an environment affected by acid precipitation and a clean environment
- Multimedia presentation about acid-forming pollutants and the mechanism of their action
- A video recorded from a hand-made experiment - formation of acid from sulfur(IV) oxide
- Exhibits - plants that were exposed to acid during a home experiment showing how acid precipitation disrupts the photosynthesis process by destroying chlorophyll in these plants
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Student presentations included:
- Map showing countries with the highest share of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions
- An experiment illustrating the greenhouse effect with a thermometer in a closed jar heated by a lamp and in a jar without a lid
- A poster explaining the greenhouse effect and why the effect itself is necessary for the existence of life on Earth, and its excessive increase may pose a threat
SMOG
Student presentations included:
- Experiments illustrating the formation of smog - a smog model in a bottle
- Posters explaining the formation of smog and its impact on human health
OZONE HOLE
Student presentations included:
- A mock-up showing the sources of ozone-depleting gas emissions
- Posters explaining the formation of the ozone hole and its impact on human health
- A model illustrating the phenomenon of solar radiation and its role for the Earth
AIR POLLUTION IN THE WORLD AND HUMAN HEALTH
Student presentations included:
- A world map on which, after viewing the multimedia material, it was possible to use flags to mark the distribution of air pollution in the world
- A human model that takes into account organs sensitive to harmful substances present in the air
- The effects of an experiment examining the level of dust in the air around the school
- Quiz with questions about air pollution in various places around the world and their impact on human health
